Daddy's Knack For Tacky-repost

Daddy’s Knack For Tacky

Daddy always had a knack for tacky.  Like the time the storm door got cracked.  He put duct tape from top to bottom on one side ‘n then put another piece from top to bottom on the other side.  That’s not all he used duct tape on.  It seemed that whatever was cracked, torn, or broken duct tape could fix it.

Mamma used a lot of Tupperware bowls to mix up her cakes ‘n corn bread ‘n other things she cooked.  When the bowl got cracked, Daddy put duct tape over it, ‘n Mamma kept on usin’ it.

When I was in high school, I started datin’.  I never wanted the boys to come to my house ‘cause I was embarrassed how it looked.  Our livin’ room furniture was a hodge podge of pieces picked up from here ‘n there.  One of the lamp shades was torn in a couple of places .   Yeah, duct tape kept it together.

In my bedroom, the window was broken.  Daddy duct taped a towel over the hole then put plastic over the window.  It was a long time before that window got a new piece of glass.

Daddy’s knack for tacky extended over to his clothes.  He’d wear a pull-over shirt with holes in it ‘cause it was comfortable.  He didn’t care what it looked like.

Daddy always said that even though somethin’ is broken or torn, it doesn’t mean it can’t be used,  just like when God uses people who are “broken” to help others ‘n to further His kingdom.

Psalm 147:3  He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Things To Think 'bout:
1. What's important to you?
2. How have you been broken?

Lord, take our brokenness 'n make us whole so we can better serve you. In the name of Jesus, amen.

The best security you can have is knowing that you are in God's love and grace!

  1. This sounds like our house growing up Janet; we used Chiffon margarine containers to eat our salads in, we did have some mix and match tupperware though.

  2. I think many of us grew up this way. I had everything I needed, but I sure didn't have everything I wanted. And what I had wasn't often the best. Today, we worry so much about the label on the things we own we don't care about what's important. :) Thanks for sharing, Janet!
