Life Lessons from Daddy

I always felt safe with Daddy 'round. He could solve any problem 'n fix anyth'n. I rememb'r runn'n in tha house. When I start'd ta go outside, I hit tha storm door hard. Glass shatt'rd all ov'r tha porch 'n part of tha door got brok'n. Daddy hugg'd me 'n said, "Don't worry. I'm glad you're ok. I'll fix tha door." He took duct tape 'n put one piece from top ta' bottom on one side, then he took anoth'r piece 'n did tha same thing on tha oth'r side.

Me 'n my sist'r grew up in tha '50's. Mamma stay'd home while Daddy work'd. When we start'd school, Mamma got a job that allow'd her ta be home with us aft'r school. Daddy serv'd in WWII 'n became a manag'r of a comp'ny that work'd with farm'rs. I learn'd a lot from a man who thought he wasn't smart 'cause he didn't get a college education.

What are some things I learn'd?:

1. Ta' be on time. I learn'd ta value oth'rs time. 'N not ta waste it 'cause it's a gift from God.

2. Ride a bike. I rememb'r when I got my bike. It was a surprise! I was so excit'd! Daddy help'd me get on it, he told me ta start peddl'n while he held on ta tha handlebar 'n my seat. We went 'round 'n 'round in our front yard. I kept fall'n off 'til I got tha' hang of it. Then Daddy let go 'n I was rid'n it by myself. I learn'd that patience is important when learn'n someth'n new.

3. Drive a car. When I was grow'n up, Daddy would let me drive tha car in our back yard. I'd drive 'round tha trees, pretend ta stop at a stoplight, 'n drive up tha driveway. All went went well 'til I back'd inta a tree 'n broke a tail light. From that I learn'd that ya need ta be careful how ya handle obstacles in your life.

4. Always have faith in God. As all kids do, I ask'd Daddy a lot of questions 'bout God 'n be'n sav'd. He said that accept'n Jesus as my Savior is tha most important decision I'll ev'r make. Daddy 'n Mamma both had great faith in God. Life goes a whole lot bett'r with Him than without Him.

5. Ta' laugh. Daddy lov'd ta make people laugh. I learn'd not ta take myself too seriously.

6. Take care of pets. I lov'd my dog, Skippy. I learn'd quickly, though, that hav'n a pet meant giv'n it a lot of care - feed'n, bath'n, lov'n, etc. It taught me responsibility.

7. Ta' wrestle. When Daddy got home from work, he'd tickle me 'n my sist'r 'n we'd all end up  roll'n on tha' floor. I learn'd ta look for tha humor in life.

8. Ta' look up at tha' stars. On summer nights, we'd lay on a quilt in tha' front yard 'n look up at tha stars. God's universe is so vast, it's hard ta take it in. I learn'd ta appreciate tha world God made.

There's so much more that I learn'd from Daddy. Thank ya for be'n my earthly fath'r. I miss ya so much! Thank ya Lord for giv'n me a smart Daddy who lov'd ya 'n rais'd his childr'n in your love.

Father's Day Poem

Our Dad

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it...Dad.

"A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society." Billy Graham, Christian Evangelist

Ephesians 6:4 "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord."

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

Lord, thank you for our earthly Fath'rs.
I pray that ya will give 'em strength ta be Godly
in their decisions at home, work, 'n all they do.
Keep 'em faith-fill'd. In tha name of Jesus, amen.

  1. I like this post. Not too many people are fond of their dads like the Mom... so I really like the few that do. God bless you!
